Review: One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus – SO GOOD!

One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Pay close attention and you might solve this.

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.

Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.

Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.

Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.

Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.

And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?

Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.”

May Wrap-Up

Well, well, well.

Here we are again. Another month is over and I honestly don’t know where all my time has gone. These months are FLYING by and I feel like I haven’t accomplished anything?????

Huh. Anyway.

I am already doing my May Wrap-Up today because I have my regular TTT and T5W posts scheduled for the next 2 days. And over Whitsuntide break, I will be visiting my family in Poland! ❤

So from Thursday onward until I-don’t-even-know-when-I-am-coming-home lol you won’t hear too much from me and I probably won’t have time to check out your posts either! *sad face* My apologies in advance! Feel free to leave any links down below, if you’ve written any cool posts that you’re super proud of! 🙂

I think that was enough talking, let’s get into the May Wrap-Up!

Books I’ve Read

I have read 8 books this month which is great! I’ve been really busy with uni and I still managed to read as many books as I read last month so I’m quite proud *pats shoulder*

A Court of Mist and Fury and A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas: Yes, I have finally read this series and I have become absolute trash for it. Feysand is my LIFE and the Inner Circle are my babies and Velaris is my actual HOME. I know that this series is problematic at times and I acknowledge that but I am obsessed with it. 5 stars to both of these books! ❤

I had to read both The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde for class and they were good reads!

And do you know what that means? For once, I have actually managed to read all of the books on my TBR!!! To be fair, I only had 3 books on my May TBR and 2 of them were required reads for uni but STILL! YAY ME!

*click on the book covers to be directed to the Goodreads page*

My favourite reads of the month have definitely been both ACOMAF and ACOWAR along with One Of Us Is Lying! I will have a review for the latter up on Thursday!

Currently Reading

I am still reading The Alchemists of Loom by Elise Kova! I am participating in a buddy read hosted by the author but I’ve been slacking lately *oops*. I am really loving the book though and I can’t wait for the sequel to come out! (I already have an e-ARC of the 2nd book which I’m so excited about!!! :D)

What I’ve Watched

NOTHING! Ever since I created my book blog, I’ve been slacking with watching any kind of TV! There are no TV shows that I’m interested in keeping up with and I’m not really in the mood to start a new one! Sooooo yeah. No answer here! XD

What I Listened To

Let me check my monthly Spotify playlist real quick…….

  • HARRY STYLES by Harry Styles (you guys know that I love Harry so this shouldn’t come as a surprise :P)
  • Lust for Life – Lana Del Rey ft. The Weeknd (LOVE LOVE LOVE <3)
  • chateau – Blackbear (SUCH. A. BOP.)
  • I’m The One – DJ Khaled ft. Chance The Rapper, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Quavo (I’m trash for this song)
  • Slow Hands – Niall Horan (this gives me GREAT vibes)
  • Umbrella – Rihanna (THANKS TOM HOLLAND I CAN’T GET UR PERFORMANCE OUT OF MY HEAD)

Here’s the video if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

Awesome posts by fellow bloggers published this month

Future Plans
  • get through most of my Netgalley ARCs because I’m sick of them and I want to skip out on reading/requesting ARCs for a while BECAUSE IT’S STRESSING ME OUT
  • write more Discussion posts: I’ve been having quite a few ideas for discussion posts lately but I’m too lazy to write them lol
  • fix/clean-up my blog: meaning aesthetic-wise and schedule-wise and content-wise (does that even make sense lol)
  • START WRITING: ohhh my god I have all these ideas in my head and I really want to write a story so hopefully that will be happening soon

I have more plans but I can’t remember them so that’s it for now XD

ANOTHER SUPER LONG WRAP-UP BUT I HOPE YOU ENJOYED IT.

Thank you for reading!

My Life In Books tag

Would you look at that – I am actually trying to catch up on all my pending tags?! This is unheard of! 😛

Anyway, I was tagged for the My Life In Books tag by the lovely Joanne @ YA Guitarist! Please make sure to check out her blog and click that follow button! 😉

This tag was originally created by One World, Too Many Pages.

A book for each initial

J – Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

A – Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

C – Caraval by Stephanie Garber

K – The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

I – Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi

E – Every Day by David Levithan

(obviously I had to try and get at least ONE of the Shatter Me books in there ;P)

Age – count along your bookshelf

I am 19 years old and the 19th book on my shelf is Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare. Well, this is one of the many books that I’ve owned for ages but haven’t gotten around to reading yet! The Infernal Devices series has been on my radar ever since I read the TMI series! I really do hope I’ll get around to reading this trilogy soon!

A book that represents a destination you would love to
travel to

For this one, I could have chosen pretty much any novel that is set in London! I decided on Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding because I love the movies 😛 It has always been a dream of mine to go to London one day and I just really, really hope I get to go there one day! Maybe even live there?! *sighs*

Favourite colour

Ohhh, I don’t really have a favourite colour if I’m completely honest! I do love the colour of my room though, it’s this very cute, light blue. And generally, I’m very fond of different shades of blue like teal, azure, royal blue etc and I love books with blue covers! One book cover that represents those lovely blues is Gemina (The Illuminae Files #2) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.

Fondest Memories of

I could have chosen a lot of books for this one because there’s so many books that I read in different situations that I think back to very fondly 😛 I decided on The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer. I used to be absolute trash for the Twilight series (I think most of us were) and this is an Eclipse novella!

I think back to it very fondly because I just remember having a sleepover with my friend and she had only just gotten this book and I was desperate to read it!  I brought one of my books to the sleepover and she gave me this one and we LITERALLY sat next to each other all night long, not speaking a word, just reading. Reading until it was dawn and I finished the entire book in that one sitting! And my friend did as well and we just looked at each other… and went to sleep lol. I just love thinking back to that night like we literally exchanged books, sat next to each other in silence and read :’) It was lovely ❤

Most difficult to read

To be honest, I found it so difficult to read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. I just had a hard time with the writing and a lot of the words that I didn’t understand… and I forced myself through it at times. I did enjoy the story, especially after listening to the audiobook, but I just had difficulties reading it.

Which book in your TBR pile will you get the most satisfaction/biggest sense of accomplishment from?

Oh, this is easy! That will definitely be Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I know I’ve said this a lot already but Six of Crows has been on my TBR list ever since it got released. (And you’re probably thinking GOD JACKIE WHEN WILL YOU FINALLY STOP TALKING ABOUT READING IT AND ACTUALLY START READING IT?!?!?!?! LOL) I’ve absolutely adored the Grisha trilogy and I am so excited to finally read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom and get to know the characters my children that everyone keeps talking about! 🙂

cheers (10)

I tag…

May @ Forever and Everly / Mandy @ Book Princess Reviews / Nadwa @ Painfully Fictional / Laura @ thebookcorps / Rendz @ Reading with Rendz / Shanya and Tanya @ Twin Bookmarks / Deanna @ Deanna Writes About

Review: Heartborn by Terry Maggert or… why I almost DNFed this book

Title: Hearborn

Author: Terry Maggert

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance

Published: July 31st 2016 by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform

Pages: 238

via Goodreads:

Keiron was never meant to be anything other than a hero. Born high above in a place of war and deception, he is Heartborn, a being of purity and goodness in a place where violence and deceit are just around every corner. His disappearance will spark a war he cannot see, for Keiron has pierced the light of days to save a girl he has never met, for reasons he cannot understand.

Livvy Foster is seventeen, brave, and broken. With half a heart, she bears the scars of a lifetime of pain and little hope of survival. Until Keiron arrives. I

n the middle of a brewing war and Livvy’s failing heart, Keiron will risk everything for Livvy, because a Heartborn’s life can only end in one way: Sacrifice. Fall with Livvy and Keiron as they seek the truth about her heart, and his power, and what it means to love someone who will give their very life to save you.”

Goodreads / Amazon UK / Amazon US / Barnes & Noble

*I received an e-ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence my opinion in any way!*

Heartborn is a novel about… I am too #lazy to write a short summary but it is somewhat explained in the following paragraphs – or go read the blurb before reading this review!

The book had an interesting premise and it started out great but it was very anti-climactic for me.

Heartborn had a great opening scene – Keiron is an angel and stands on some kind of floating-in-the-sky island, about to jump down to get to earth. But his brother binds/chains him and his wings and pushes him to his death – it was so intriguing and I immediately wanted to know more about the world and what was going to happen next!

Then there is a POV switch and we get to know Livvy who struggles with a heart condition – she only has half a heart and therefore needs to be very careful when doing simple things like walking. She is working at a library at the desk to spare her heart from having to endure too much.

I thought the concept was pretty interesting and I was excited for Keiron and Livvy to meet. I was eager to find out what Keiron’s “destiny” was and why he was in such a rush to get to earth to meet Livvy.

And then the confusing POV switches happened – you either got to see whatever was happening between Keiron and Livvy on earth (from Livvy’s POV) or what was happening at House Windhook in the sky (the place where Keiron’s family live).

That fact alone was very confusing because the story completely lacked world-building. The only thing I knew was that a House Windhook existed and Keiron’s parents lived there but I didn’t know what their purpose was, if there were other houses, how they stood in relation to each other/how the whole angel society up in the sky worked etc.

I also found myself not caring for any of the characters of House Windhook. Some girl named Cressa (I believe?) appeared, delivering a message (from another House apparently) that Keiron’s brother was going to get murdered for pushing his brother off their land because they had assumed Keiron had died in the fall.

But since nothing was really explained, I didn’t even bother to understand the future events that happened at House Windhook and I found myself skimming through it. There was a major fight scene in the last third of the book between House Windhook and some other angelic House (I still don’t get who they were and what their purpose was lol like were they superior or not? Why did you fight? What is this???) so I didn’t care for any of those new characters EITHER!

At first, I was still quite interested to see how Keiron and Livvy would get along and I thought the romance between them was going to be slow-burning because he was there on a mission to save Livvy – but literally a day after they met they kissed and talked about dating and I was like…… OH HI THERE INSTA-LOVE, IT’S NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN!!!

Another annoying trope in the book was the group of bullies that were obviously your typical stuck-up mean girls who made fun of Livvy and called her Wheezer because of her heart condition (umm, who does that?????!?). I am SO tired of this trope like can we just stop *unimpressed smiley*

The story simply couldn’t hold my interest any longer and I found myself skimming through the last 40% of the book. I was so close to DNFing it!

I thought it was going to get better but the ending was so very predictable. It was partly revealed in the synopsis already so I was not very surprised lol.

There was nothing new or exciting in this book or specific to point out that made me go “Wow, this is unique!”

(I think the reason why I didn’t find it in me to care for any of the characters or how the story up in the sky progressed might have been because I only ever read this book on my 20-minute journey to and from uni and I was never really concentrated enough to read this book. *oopsies* #myfault #maybe)

Heartborn had such great potential to become a whole action-packed novel about angels and humans with a lot of fighting but it absolutely fell short.

Sadly, the lack of world-building, the major plot holes, the cliché tropes and the forgettable characters that I couldn’t connect to lead me to give this book 2 stars only.

⭐⭐ (2 OUT OF 5 STARS)

Do you guys know the video of the woman saying *I am confusion* when talking about the pronunciation of Kansas and Arkansas??? Yeah, that’s how I was feeling while reading this book.

I don’t usually rate books below 3 stars because I feel like… just because I didn’t enjoy the book doesn’t mean someone else won’t! But this simply wasn’t very enjoyable for me and I would have DNFed it if I wasn’t already so far through with it.

Buttonnnn

What was the last book that you (almost) DNFed? Why? Let’s chat in the comments!

The Goodreads Book Tag

I am so SO behind on all of my tags, I literally have 2 pages in my blog journal filled with Awards/Tags and I’m so bad at keeping up but I’M TRYING!!! 😀

Anyway, welcome to the Goodreads Book Tag!

I’ve been using Goodreads for years now and I am SO glad that it exists! It’s literally a DREAM for every book nerd! It’s such a great way to keep up with books you’ve read and TBR books and discovering new books! And being able to connect with other fellow book lovers all over the world is just incredible! ❤

Feel free to befriend me on Goodreads here!

I was tagged by Nadwa @ Painfully Fictional a long, long time ago lol (as I said, I’m trying to keep up XD) and Sheri @ Read in a Flash who tagged me very recently so I thought: “Alright Jackie, it’s time to get it together!”

So here we are 😀

Enjoy the Goodreads Book Tag!

What Was The Last Book You Marked As Read?

Renegades by Marissa Meyer

I have literally only just heard about this book a few days ago when Nadwa made a post about it!!! I can’t believe I didn’t find out about this before because it sounds AWESOME!

“…a star-crossed love story between a girl who’s been raised by supervillains and a boy who’s been raised by superheroes.”

I’M SOLD HELLO WHERE CAN I GET MY COPY

What Are You Currently Reading?

The Alchemists of Loom by Elise Kova

The author Elise Kova is hosting a buddy read on Facebook (which you can still join here if you can catch up on 20 chapters in a day XD) and I am really enjoying it so far! I got the eBook for under 1$ (whaaat?) when Elise did some kind of promotion thingy for the group buddy read! It’s honestly such a great book, I might write a review once I’m through with it at the end of the month! 😀

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

Well, my ACOWAR copy F I N A L LY came last Friday (after being delayed like TWICE) and I have finally started reading it (I hope you’re proud, Bella)! It’s taking me a while because I keep over-analyzing every single line lol but it’s great so far!!! 😛

What Do You Plan To Read Next?

Wellllllll… a few days ago I picked out 5 books from my shelves and put them on my night stand which now kind of serve as my ‘priority-books-to-read-next’ if that makes any sense? But the next book I’m going to read won’t be from that stack of books (lol talk about priority reads :P) but rather from my endless e-ARCs waiting on Kindle!

One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

I was so excited when I got approved to read One Of Us Is Lying on Netgalley and since this is coming out soon, I’ll be reading that next!!!!! 😀 😀

Do You Use The Star Rating System?

Yes I do! I usually don’t rate under 3 stars though! I think I’m too generous a lot of the time but I feel like just because I PERSONALLY did not like the book, doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t like it! And if the writing and everything was good and I didn’t notice any issues/problematic things, I am most likely going to give it 3 stars! 😀

Are You Doing A 2017 Reading Challenge?

Jackie has
read 35 books toward
her goal of
50 books.
hide

Of course!!! I have recently upped my goal because I had already reached my goal of reading 30 books 😀

Do You Have A Wishlist?

Not really! I have a few books that I’d consider my ‘priority- buys/reads’ in my Amazon cart and I check it every day to see if the prices have changed! So that’s kind of like a wishlist 😀

What Book Do You Plan On Buying Next?

Umm, well since my book-buying ban didn’t quite work out in April (I’’ll probably have to do a haul soon XD) I’ve decided not to buy any books in May instead! And it’s going well so far! Let’s see how long that will last 😀 I’ve pre-ordered When Dimple Met Rishi ages ago so that should be the book that I’ll be receiving next (if I don’t buy other books first XD)!

Do You Have Any Favorite Quotes?

Can I just say all Shatter Me quotes? No? Well, let me just mention a few of them anyway 😛

THE MOST ICONIC LINE EVER:

“Ignite, my love. Ignite.”

Tahereh Mafi, Ignite Me

WARNER = KING OF DRAGGING!!!

“Do you never get exhausted being so wholly unbearable? You have as much charisma as the rotting innards of unidentified roadkill.”

Tahereh Mafi, Ignite Me

I WANT TO DIE JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS SCENE:

“And we are quotation marks, inverted and upside down, clinging to one another at the end of this life sentence. Trapped by lives we did not choose.”

Tahereh Mafi, Ignite Me

YES GIRL YES GIRL Y E S  G I R L:

“I like the way I feel about myself when I’m with him.” I say quietly. “Warner thinks I’m strong and smart and capable and he actually values my opinion. He makes me feel like his equal–like I can accomplish just as much as he can, and more. And if I do something incredible, he’s not even surprised. He expects it. He doesn’t treat me like I’m some fragile little girl who needs to be protected all the time.”

Tahereh Mafi, Ignite Me

some non-Shatter Me quotes lol:

“I took a breath. “Your highness—”
“Nikolai,” he corrected. “But I’ve also been known to answer to ‘sweetheart’ or ‘handsome.”

Leigh Bardugo, Siege and Storm

“There are good days and hard days for me—even now. Don’t let the hard days win.”

Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Mist and Fury

“To the people who look at the stars and wish, Rhys.”
Rhys clinked his glass against mine. “To the stars who listen— and the dreams that are answered.”

Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Mist and Fury

Who Are Your Favorite Authors?

Tahereh (Queen of YA) Mafi, Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu – my holy trinity ❤

Have You Joined Any Groups?

I have but I don’t use them that much!

EXCEPT FOR THE NEW YA BOOK BLOGGERS GROUP THAT NADWA HAS CREATED BECAUSE WE PLANNED TO BUDDY READ CINDER!!! If you want to join us, feel free to join the group!!! Check out Nadwa’s post for more info! We will be buddy-reading it in July and there will also be other really cool things happening 😉

That’s it for the Goodreads Book Tag!

Top Ten Tuesday: Books To Buy Your Mum

Happy (belated) Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums out there! Germany’s Mother’s Day was on Sunday and I had a great day with my family ❤ It was my sister’s birthday on Friday and we celebrated with our extended family circle on Saturday which was a lot of fun as always! And Sunday was Mother’s Day! So we basically had a 3-day family celebration which was AWESOME! ❤

I hope everyone else had a lovely Mother’s Day if you’ve already celebrated it as well!

Now, back to Top Ten Tuesday.

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there’s a new book-related topic to answer!

This week’s topic is a Mother’s Day related Freebie!

I have based my “Books To Buy Your Mum“-recommendations on my own mum!!! She never has a lot of time for reading but I buy her at least one book a year – whether it’s for her birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day – and these are some of the books that I bought her that she enjoyed or that she borrowed from friends/the library! They might be something for your mum! 😀

Enjoy!

Anything by Nicholas Sparks

My mum is a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks!!! I think she has read every single one of his books except for like 1 or 2. I guess she is a sucker for the drama and the romance in his books and I feel like they’re the typical “Mum-books”. At least all of my mum’s friends are reading his books as well 😀 And I really enjoy them as well! AND THE MOVIES! OH GOD, THE MOVIES *cries*. My mum has picked out a few of her favourites – The Notebook, Safe Haven, The Lucky One, Dear John  – and they might be something your mum would enjoy as well!

Nora Roberts

My aunt has a whole Nora Roberts collection and she gave some of her books to my mum and apparently they were quite enjoyable! She doesn’t remember the names of the books so I just listed a few that looked pretty 😛

The Girl You Left Behind – Jojo Moyes

Before I knew anything about Me Before You, I always thought that Jojo Moyes was another one of those “Mum-authors” (lol) who had loads of romance and drama in her books! I have only read Me Before You but I loved it and I might have to check out some of her other books! My mum owns The Girl You Left Behind and enjoyed it a lot!

The One That Got Away – Leigh Himes

My mum is currently reading this book and she says it’s really good! It’s about a 30-something year old busy, overworked and stressed out mum who is trying to balance her career and life as a mum and wife. One day she takes a tumble down an escalator and wakes up in an alternate universe where a senator husband awaits her in a life full of luxury and nobility. Even I think that this sounds intriguing – I’ll have to borrow it from my mum once she’s finished with it!

Stephen King

If your mum isn’t into romance at all, Stephen King might be an option! Personally, neither me nor my mum have read any of his books but I own two of them (Under The Dome and Cell) and I definitely want to read them. They might be something for your mum! 😀

Those are pretty much the only authors that my mum loved. She has read some other books but she can’t remember the names of either the book or the author (and I can’t either) so that’s it for the books to buy your mum 😛

Since this is a very meager Top Ten Tuesday post I thought why not add 3 super cool/strong/awesome mums in literature at the end of this post?!

Molly Weasely, Ma from Room and Natalie Prior are all super fierce and incredible mums! They have very different personalities but essentially they love their children to death and would do ANYTHING to protect and keep them safe! ❤

So that’s it for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday!

Thanks for reading!

Buttonnnn

Who are your favourite mums in literature? Have you read any of these authors? Do you think your mum would like to read these books? What are some of your mum’s favourite books or authors? And which books do you think should I buy MY mum next (based on these recommendations)? Let’s chat in the comments!

Review: The Never Dawn by R.E. Palmer

Title: The Never Dawn (Book 1)

Author: R.E. Palmer

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopia

Published: August 5th 2016 by FrontRunner Publications

Pages: 282

(via Goodreads):

“All his young life, Noah has longed to see the sky he’s only heard about in stories. For over one hundred years, Noah’s people have toiled deep beneath the Earth preparing for The New Dawn – the historic day when they will emerge to reclaim the land stolen by a ruthless enemy.

But when Rebekah, the girl of his forbidden desire, discovers a secret their leader has been so desperate to keep, Noah suspects something is wrong. Together, they escape and begin the long climb to the surface.
But nothing could prepare them for what awaits outside.“

*I received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thanks so much to R.E. Palmer. This did not influence my opinion in any way!*

When I first read the synopsis of this book, I was intrigued right from the start! I thought the whole idea and concept of the story was really cool and I felt like it was going to be a very interesting story. And I definitely wasn’t let down!

The Never Dawn is a dystopian YA novel set underground where the main character Noah lives with an entire community. Every day they work towards The New Dawn – the day when they get to go back to the surface of the Earth and see the sky again. The community is ruled by Mother. Everyone follows what she says. Things have to be in strict order and there is no place for personal desires or individuality.

The main character Noah is an 18-year-old boy who always had the best interests for the community and blindly followed everything that was asked of him. He never fell out of line and worked efficiently and did everything to please Mother. He was a very well-developed character with a lot of depth and you really got to know him throughout the story.

His development from a blind follower of rules and order to and independent and critical thinker was very believable. The change of attitude wasn’t abrupt and Noah was never a rebel who questioned the system right from the start (like you might see in other dystopian stories) – it was always little things that influenced him and he was slowly uncovering the secrets that encouraged him to change and re-think the entire system of their underground society. I really liked how that character development took place because it didn’t feel forced or too sudden!

One of the catalysts of Noah’s re-thinking process was Rebekah. The rules are that you’re barely allowed to interact with anyone in the community except the members of your own group. But Noah has always been watching Rebekah from afar. Personal desires were forbidden but Noah still developed a crush on her.

The development of that fascination with Rebekah was the only thing that didn’t sit quite right with me. All Noah did was watch her during their community meals but they never actually spoke before. There was one scene where Rebekah was serving the food – she handed Noah his plate and he was so nervous that he couldn’t stop sweating and internally freaking out. It felt a little too much in my opinion.

When Rebekah revealed some of the secrets that Mother kept hidden from the whole community to Noah, they started making their plans to sneak out and escape and that was when story got very exciting.

About halfway through the book, the whole thing really picked up and I found myself easily immersed in the story. I was so intriguing to see how Noah and Rebekah carried out their escape and how they revealed the truth and uncovered the secrets of the underground system.

I am not going to reveal the ending but it was something I would have never expected! The last quarter of the book takes you through some twists and turns of the system and what they revealed at the end was a big plot twist! There are a few open questions that haven’t been answered and it definitely leaves you wanting more!

Overall, this was a very quick and enjoyable read and I can totally recommend it to fans of dystopian settings/stories like The 100, Divergent and The Maze Runner!

Fandom Mashups – Hero Vs. Villain

Hello and welcome to a new meme that I am participating in!

This feature is called Fandom Mashups and was created by Micheline @ Lunar Rainbows. Each week there will be a unique fictional scenario and you have to pick 5 fictional characters from 5 different fandoms to help tackle each scenario!

This week’s topic is…

Hero and Villain Mix-Up! – Pair up 5 heros with 5 villains from OTHER fandoms (Example: Iron-Man VS Mr. Burns LOL) and comment on who you think would come out on top.

Before we start, I don’t know if you could consider any of the characters that I picked for heroes ACTUAL ‘heroes’… let’s just say the ‘good’ guys lol.

Round 1

Wonder WomanVS Negan (The Walking Dead)

WINNER: Wonder Woman. She’d take out Negan’s arrogant (but attractive) ass in 3 seconds! Look at her fierceness in that Gif! Also, the Wonder Woman movie is coming out next month and I’m quite pumped!!! 😀

Round 2

Aang (Avatar: The Last Airbender) VSScar (The Lion King)

WINNER: Aang for sure! He looks like an innocent little boy but he is the freakin’ Avatar! Of course he would come out on top in a battle with Scar! I mean, what is Scar going to do – fight with his claws? By the time he gets out those claws, Aang would have used either one of his bending abilities to let Scar land on his ass! 😀

Round 3

Scott McCall (Teen Wolf)VS
Klaus Mikaelson (The Originals)

WINNER: Oh, definitely Klaus! And NO, I am not biased (ok maybe I am, I love Klaus and don’t really like Scott lol) but Klaus is an ORIGINAL vampire and he has so much more strength and experience and he’d definitely come out on top!

Round 4

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)VS Ramsay Bolton (Game of Thrones)

WINNER: HERMIONE GRANGER! I WOULD LOVE FOR HER TO KICK RAMSAY’S ASS!!!! She could take him out with her magic in a heartbeat and turn him into a weeping baby! Ramsay is the worst, I just need someone to beat him up 😛

Also, how iconic is Hermione punching Draco!!?! So iconic.

Round 5

Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy) VSUrsula (The Little Mermaid)

WINNER: I feel like Ursula would somehow trick Groot with her evil tricks and magical potions to overpower him! 😦

BUT EVEN IF HE FALLS FOR HER TRICKS….. I WILL MAKE SURE THAT HE COMES BACK AS MY PRECIOUS LITTLE BABY GROOT AND BRING US ALL HAPPINESS AND JOY ❤

is this not the cutest thing?!?!

Thanks for reading and sorry for using the word ‘ass’ so much in this post lol *hides* XD

Fierce Fangirl Friday – NEW FEATURE LAUNCH

MY NEW EXCLUSIVE WEEKLY MEME IS FINALLY HERE!!!!!

Welcome to my very first Fierce Fangirl Friday! 🙂

Fierce Fangirl Friday is a weekly meme hosted by YOURS TRULY *puffs out chest* where you have the opportunity to do some healthy fangirling on your blog!

If you’re a fangirl you might be familiar with the feeling of getting overly excited about things, forgetting all about grammar and punctuation and suddenly starting to write in all caps when geeking out over something that you love dearly!

So, whenever you have something, anything to fangirl about – whether it be a book, TV show, music, celebrities, your pet, the universe, finding your soulmate or just a recent meal that you’ve had – Fierce Fangirl Friday is your opportunity to do so!

It doesn’t matter if it’s a recent obsession of yours or something you’ve been loving for a while!

All I ask of you is that you PINGBACK to me! Basically, just copy the link of any of my FFF posts and use it in your Fierce Fangirl Friday posts when tagging me! 🙂 That way I won’t miss anyone’s posts!!!

You are free to do this weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or simply whenever you feel like you need to fangirl about something 😀

I will also have a linky thing at the end of every Friday’s post where people can link-up their posts so everyone can do some blog-hopping! 😀 I have decided to do a weekly recap instead where I showcase everyone’s posts in my newest FFF post!

This meme is happening on Fridays but if you can’t make a Friday, DON’T WORRY! Just do it whenever you can!!!!

I’d just like to take this moment to thank one of my bestest blogger friends I’ve made on here: Bella @ A Bookish Belle ❤️ She has been enduring my ramblings, questions and insecurities about this meme, she has helped me come up with different name ideas and just generally reassured me that it’s a cool idea and that my graphic looks nice and just calmed my nervous and insecure mind. If you guys aren’t following her, go do that right now! She’s total Warnette trash like me and she has converted me to Feysand trash! And she is my literal Fangirl partner in crime! 💜

And if you’re wondering: “Jackie, what exactly does fangirling even mean?”

WELL! I feel like the Urban Dictionary definition is quite accurate! :’)

fangirling:

1. the reaction a fangirl has to any mention or sighting of the object of her “affection”. These reactions include shortness of breath, fainting, highpitched noises, shaking, fierce headhaking as if in the midst of a seizure, wet panties, endless blog posts, etc.

2. a gathering of two or more fangirls in which they proceed to waste endless amounts of time ogling, discussing/arguing, stalking, etc. the object of their “affection”

If you have experienced any of the “symptoms” mentioned above, Fierce Fangirl Friday is the meme for you!!! 😀

If you have any more unanswered questions, feel free to comment them down below!

NOW ONTO THE FANGIRLING PART (oh wow this is going to be my favourite part of every week!!!!!)

HARRY STYLES RELEASED HIS NEW ALBUM TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s self-titled so it’s literally Harry Styles by Harry Styles. Iconic.

It’s my sister’s birthday today so I bought her the Vinyl! And the CD is for myself 😛

Obviously, as a former #1 One Direction fan from back in the days, all of the boys still have a special place in my heart. But I’ve just been particularly excited for Harry’s new music because his taste in music is so great and I knew his music would be really damn great as well.

I looovvveeee music from the 80’s, like that typical Rock ‘N Roll kind of music – David Bowie, Prince – I’M OBSESSED! And Harry’s new album is totally inspired by the 80’s while still being his own thing and I absolutely love it!!!!

And yes, I did stay up until midnight to hear HARRY STYLES by Harry Styles (I’ll never get tired of saying that!!!!) with my other dear Twitter friends and it was SO DAMN COOL. I still have my One Direction Twitter account with like 14K followers which I use quite regularly.

I always feel like Hannah Montana when switching between my book Twitter and my I-love-Harry-Styles Twitter account hahaha! 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

But if anyone wants to follow me on there and see me freak out over Harry, leave me a comment 😛

ANYWAY. LET’S TALK ABOUT THE MASTERPIECE OF AN ALBUM, SHALL WE?

There is not a single song that I don’t like!!!! I might be biased because I’ve loved Harry for like 7 YEARS lol BUT THEY’RE ALL SO GOOD!

Sign of the Times was SUCH A GOOD DEBUT SINGLE – I swear the whole world was in love with it. And then he released Sweet Creature AND IT WAS SUCH A CUTE AND ADORABLE LIL SONG IT ALWAYS MADE ME SMILE AND GRIN AND FEEL ALL HAPPY AND GIDDY!!!!

But now that I’ve heard the whole album…… Boy, oh boy.

My top 2 are definitely Woman and From the Dining Table. ❤

Woman is such a classic rock song (it’s also a Snapchat filter!!!) and I LOVE JAMMING OUT TO IT. AND BOTH ONLY ANGEL AND KIWI ARE ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE REALLY COOL ROCK SONGS!!!! I LOVE!!!!! 😀

From the Dining Table makes me cry EVERY. DAMN. TIME. Something about it just hits me right in the feels and I start sobbing. And it’s TOTALLY A SONG THAT COULD BE PLAYED IN ONE OF THOSE TYPICAL ROMANTIC COMEDIES – BRIDGET JONES, NOTTING HILL, LOVE ACTUALLY – I’M SO HERE FOR IT!!!!!

And I still can’t believe the album is actually HERE! We’ve been anticipating it for so long and then it was April and Harry announced his new single and album and TOUR.

APROPOS TOUR.

I WILL BE SEEING MY BOY HARRY IN OCTOBER!!!!!!!! I WAS ONE OF THOSE LUCKY 111,379 PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WHO GOT TICKETS TO ONE OF HIS SHOWS!

AND GUESS FUCKING WHAT! THE SHOW IS 2 DAYS BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY. 2 DAYS. WHAT. IS THAT NOT A REALLY FREAKIN’ GREAT PRESENT LIKE HARRY REALLY DID THAT.

Yes. Anyway. Enough freaking out for now.

Listen to the album if you’re into 80’s classic rock/pop, or just really want to hear some good music 😛

That’s it for Fierce Fangirl Friday today! I really, really hope you enjoy this meme and have fun with it! And make sure to spread the word! I hope as many people as possible participate in this! FANGIRLS (and fanboys as well!) UNITE!!!!! 😀

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT SO FAR! IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, SUGGESTIONS, PROBLEMS LET ME KNOW! 😀

So, feel free to join in next week! I’m so excited to see what everyone else will be fangirling about!

Thanks for reading!

Blogger Recognition Award

BLOGGER RECIOGN AWARD

Hello there, my dear friends!

I am skipping this week’s Top Ten Tuesday because I’ve done a similar topic for the ‘Things That Make Me Want To Read A Book’-topic 2 weeks ago so check that out if you’re interested in seeing what I’d like to see more in books!

I was nominated for the Blogger Recognition Award! Zuky @ the BookBum tagged me A LONG TIME AGO and I finally got around to it! I was also tagged by Lois @ Lois Reads Books recently. Thank you both so much for this! You know the drill, if you have never heard of neither Zuky nor Lois, you better go click those two links RIGHT NOW and follow them! They’re amazing

cheers (6)

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  • Give a brief story of how your blog started.
  • Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
  • Select 10 other bloggers you want to give this award to.
  • Comment on each blog and let them know you have nominated them and provide the link to the post you created.

cheers (8)

Umm, let’s see….. The idea of having a blog has been playing around in my mind for quite a while – weeks, if not months before I created Too Much of a Book Nerd! I was very into makeup but also books and since I’m too shy (and scared lol) to have my own YouTube account, I decided a blog is the way to go! I was going to do a Makeup/Books crossover blog but eventually decided against it, as I am not makeup expert and pretty much just do whatever I want with it! 😀 So then, one day, when I had particularly too much time on my hands, I read like 10 different posts on ‘How To Create Your Own Blog’, picked a name for it, created an About page, my first blog post and boom – now here we are! 😀

cheers (7)Comment, comment, comment: If you liked someone’s post, let them know! It doesn’t matter whether it is a short and quick “Great post!” or a super long paragraph where you discuss every single detail – I think every blogger appreciates every single comment they get! At least I know that I do! ❤

Commenting on other people’s blogs also helps you to get your name out there and other bloggers might discover your blog and you will get comments in return!

Another thing is to always respond to your comments! I’ve had the experience with 1 or 2 people who never ever responded to any of mine or anyone else’s comments! That just irritated me to no end!

Be yourself: Don’t force yourself to be someone you’re not. If you hate a book that everyone adores, say it! Write that 1 star/DNF review and let people know! If you love participating in weekly memes, go for it! If you’re not into Young Adult, blog about the genre that you love! You are who you are and you have your own opinions and preferences. Don’t look at what other people are doing or try to be like them! And don’t be afraid to speak your mind (as long as you’re not offending anyone). JUST BE YOURSELF! ❤

cheers (10)

If you don’t do tags/awards , if you’ve been tagged before or if you simply want to skip this one, feel freet to do so! 😛 And if you WANT to have a go at it, consider yourself tagged!

That’s it for my little pieces of advice! I haven’t been blogging for too long but I hope they were helpful 😛

Thanks for reading!
