2017 Wrap Up // Best and Worst + Most Suprising and Disappointing Books of 2017 and everything in between!

Well, well, well. Guess who’s back from the dead her unannounced hiatus.

IT’S YA GIRL JACKIE (in case you forgot my name lmao) aka the one who takes a month to reply to comments and almost never blog hops anymore because she’s trash life gets in the way. But what’s new *shrugs*

I actually planned to go on a 2-week long hiatus between Christmas and now, and I planned to have at least two more posts up before I did that and actually announce the hiatus but….. you know….

But I’m back now (at least for a week or two?) before I go on another hiatus because I’ll be in study hell I mean– okay no I really mean STUDY HELL.

Before I do that though, I wanted to take a look at the year 2017. I honestly can’t believe how FAST it went by—I swear, this was one of the quickest years EVER and while I have accomplished and done some incredible things, I still feel that overall it was pretty meh and I could have done MORE.

However, my 2017 from a bookish perspective was fantastic and it was THE BEST reading year I’ve had so far???? I’m SOOOO excited to go through my Goodreads shelves and see which books I loved and hated most this year AHHHH.

I’m back with another Fierce Fangirl Friday post!

Originally, I had a completely different post planned for today but there’s been a CHANGE OF PLANS BECAUSE I RECEIVED SOME SUPER EXCITING BOOK MAIL YESTERDAY AND I NEED TO TALK SCREAM ABOUT IT.

I’m not sure if I’m FULLY back from my hiatus yet but I’ll talk more about that in my next post which will either be my Wrap Up or the post I had planned for today! Continue reading “SOME VERY EXCITING BOOK MAIL AKA I NEED TO FANGIRL!!! // oh, i WONDER what this WOMAN is talking about?”

Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

I admit, I didn’t want to do this tag when I’ve first seen it around but now EVERYONE is doing it and I stumbled across Mandy’s post and her answers to the questions were so on point and I could relate to so many of them so I just had to do it, too!

If you’re not following Mandy yet then you’re really missing out??? She is the queen of Disney princesses, in fact, her entire blog is filled with them! She even has her own Disney Princesses Rating System which is so cool and it amazes me every time! Go follow her blog. Right Now. Yes, I am forcing you.

(Oh by the way, I reread the Shatter Me books at the beginning of the year but I won’t be mentioning them because they’d literally be the answer to EVERY SINGLE QUESTION)

So, here we go! Continue reading “Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag”

A Very Fangirly Book Haul (20+ books because I love making my bank account suffer)

I got back from my Poland trip on Tuesday but I wanted to take 2 more days off instead of immediately diving back into blogging and stressing myself out again.

In the last couple of days/weeks, I’ve been feeling very drained and I was stressed out to the MAX because I felt so pressured to write posts, comment on everyone’s posts, do some blog-hopping, write some more posts and so on and I almost considered taking a break!

But then my Poland trip came along and I pre-wrote a few posts that would go up while I was away. I visited my family for a few days and it was a lot of fun and a great time to relax and not worry about any obligations (including blogging)!

It was really good for me and I had time to reflect and think about some changes I wanted to make to my blog (especially schedule- and content-wise) and I am back to being motivated and HAVING FUN again. Blogging shouldn’t feel like an obligation and I’m glad that I was able to get rid of the pressure that I’ve been putting on myself!

Soooo, let’s hope that I’ve learned my lesson!

But enough about me and my #stressedout self.

As you can tell by the title, this will be a humongous book haul! I’ve accumulated all of these books in April and May even though I’ve technically been on a book buying ban but that obiviously didn’t work out LOL. Continue reading “A Very Fangirly Book Haul (20+ books because I love making my bank account suffer)”

Most Anticipated Book Releases – June + second half of 2017 (TTT crossover)

I’ve been meaning to do a Most Anticipated June Releases post but then I realised that this week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic had to do with new releases as well so I thought I’d bring the two together!

This week’s TTT topic is Top Ten Most Anticipated Books For The Second Half of 2017!

Top Ten Tuesday

First, I will be sharing with you the books that are being released in June that I’m most excited about!

Want by Cindy Pon

Release Date: June 13th 2017

“From critically acclaimed author Cindy Pon comes an edge-of-your-seat sci-fi thriller, set in a near-future Taipei plagued by pollution, about a group of teens who risk everything to save their city.

Jason Zhou survives in a divided society where the elite use their wealth to buy longer lives. The rich wear special suits, protecting them from the pollution and viruses that plague the city, while those without suffer illness and early deaths. Frustrated by his city’s corruption and still grieving the loss of his mother who died as a result of it, Zhou is determined to change things, no matter the cost.

With the help of his friends, Zhou infiltrates the lives of the wealthy in hopes of destroying the international Jin Corporation from within. Jin Corp not only manufactures the special suits the rich rely on, but they may also be manufacturing the pollution that makes them necessary.

Yet the deeper Zhou delves into this new world of excess and wealth, the more muddled his plans become. And against his better judgment, Zhou finds himself falling for Daiyu, the daughter of Jin Corp’s CEO. Can Zhou save his city without compromising who he is, or destroying his own heart?”

Bad Romance by Heather Demetrios

Release Date: June 13th 2017

“Unapologetic, real, unabashedly honest, Bad Romance is probably the best break-up story I have ever read.” Apparently, this is a very heavy, tough book with themes such as suicide, emotional/physical abuse (trigger warning!) that make you think and feel. But at the same time “Heather Demetrios never lets you feel like this book is a black hole of despair. And that’s probably what kept me turning the pages until way past my bedtime.” From the reviews I’ve seen on Goodreads, this will be an incredibly eye-opening, honest and emotional book and I can’t wait for it to come out.

“Grace wants out. Out of her house, where her stepfather wields fear like a weapon and her mother makes her scrub imaginary dirt off the floors. Out of her California town, too small to contain her big city dreams. Out of her life, and into the role of Parisian artist, New York director—anything but scared and alone.

Enter Gavin: charming, talented, adored. Controlling. Dangerous. When Grace and Gavin fall in love, Grace is sure it’s too good to be true. She has no idea their relationship will become a prison she’s unable to escape.

Deeply affecting and unflinchingly honest, this is a story about spiraling into darkness—and emerging into the light again.”

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Release Date: June 27th 2017

I’ve seen ARCs of this book around EVERYWHERE  and I don’t know anything about it but the synopsis sounds incredible and I need to read this!!!

“An unforgettable tale of two friends on their Grand Tour of 18th-century Europe who stumble upon a magical artifact that leads them from Paris to Venice in a dangerous manhunt, fighting pirates, highwaymen, and their feelings for each other along the way.

Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.

But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.

Witty, romantic, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is a sumptuous romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.”

The Space Between the Stars by Anne Corlett

Release Date: June 1st 2017

I will have a review for The Space Between The Stars up in the next couple of days!

“In a breathtakingly vivid and emotionally gripping debut novel, one woman must confront the emptiness in the universe—and in her own heart—when a devastating virus reduces most of humanity to dust and memories.

All Jamie Allenby ever wanted was space. Even though she wasn’t forced to emigrate from Earth, she willingly left the overpopulated, claustrophobic planet. And when a long relationship devolved into silence and suffocating sadness, she found work on a frontier world on the edges of civilization. Then the virus hit…

Now Jamie finds herself dreadfully alone, with all that’s left of the dead. Until a garbled message from Earth gives her hope that someone from her past might still be alive.

Soon Jamie finds other survivors, and their ragtag group will travel through the vast reaches of space, drawn to the promise of a new beginning on Earth. But their dream will pit them against those desperately clinging to the old ways. And Jamie’s own journey home will help her close the distance between who she has become and who she is meant to be…”

My Summer TBR!

And it’s also time for a huge Summer TBR!

When I saw that The Broke and the Bookish aka the hosts of Top Ten Tuesday updated their topics for the following weeks and I noticed the Summer Reads Freebie I was like:

Yes…. that is the only reason… and not because I have like 30 contemporaries on my shelves that still need to be read and there’s too many contemporary pre-orders waiting to be shipped to my house in the following weeks…

ANYWAY. Then I saw May’s big Summer TBR and if you didn’t know this, May is one of my closest, bestest blogger friends and we are so similar and pretty much agree on almost EVERYTHING, so I KNEW I had to make a Summer TBR post as well! 😀

And since I planned to do a Spring TBR post but forgot about it *cough* or should I say I wouldn’t have followed through with it anyway lol *cough* I DECIDED I’D DEFINITELY DO A TBR FOR SUMMER!

So here we are! This is gonna be a LOOOONG list of mostly contemporaries but also some SFF books so strap yourselves in, get some popcorn and enjoy the ride that is my (very ambitious) SUMMER TBR list!!!!!!!! 😀

I own both The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon and I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson and they’ve been on my TBR for AGES so I really hope to read them soon! I mean, they have the word SUN in the title – I feel like I am obligated to read at least ONE of them!!! 😀

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde / Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell / The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love by Sarvenaz Tash

You know that I am a sucker for the geeky, nerdy stories (*cough* GEEKERELLA!!!! <3) and I need more of them!!! My dear friend Mandy has rec’d me a few nerd stories and I hope to read at least a few of those this year!

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne / Angelfall by Susan Ee / By Your Side by Kasie West

Okay technically, I’ve already read Angelfall BUT I NEED TO REREAD IT AGAIN AND THEN CONTINUE WITH THE SERIES! IF YOU HAVEN’T PICKED IT UP YET PLEASE DO IT’S SO GREAT I’ve had a review written for this since like February lol I need to post it because this book is so underrated!!!!

Also… The Hating Game!!! All of my friends who know that I’m a SUCKER for hate-to-love tropes rec’d me this book and I REALLY NEED TO READ IT!!! *heart eyes*

And I’ve been meaning to read By Your Side because Mandy (again :P) talked about it in one of her posts and when I read the synopsis just now, I saw that it featured a hate-to-love relationship!!! WOOOO!!! 😀

The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West: I have never read any of Kasie West’s books but I’ve seen a lot of bloggers raving about them so I’ll read By Your Side first and this one next! I literally only just discovered this but it sounds like it’s exactly my cup of tea 😀

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han: Everyone raves about this AND I LOVE FAKE DATING AU’S so let’s have ittttt!

Okay, this is literally turning into a post of books with my favourite tropes lol but……..

The Problem with Forever by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I literally JUST discovered this one when I was looking for books that had the friends to lovers trope but it sounds SO GOOD I’m excited!!!

Well, most of the books on my TBR are books that I should have read years ago basically but yeah lol these are the ones that I finally want to read this year 😛

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven: This was on May’s Summer TBR and I remembered that I bought this books 3 YEARS AGO and I still haven’t read it so I should probably do that :’)

There’s more but like… I need to limit myself 😛

THAT’S IT!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, this was such a fun post lol sorry that this got so long *whoopsies* I COULD HAVE PUT EVEN MORE BOOKS ON HERE but let’s be real… I’ll probably only read 3 out of the 267 books that are on this list LOL 😛

Actually, if I manage to read at least one book from each of my categories, I’ll be happy *fingers crossed*

Thanks for reading!

Have you read any of the books on my Summer TBR? What did you think of them? WHICH ONE OF THESE SHOULD I READ FIRST? What books do you plan to read this summer? Let’s chat in the comments!

Waiting on Wednesday: 27 Hours by Tristina Wright – go preorder this book!!!

Since I am skipping this week’s Top 5 Wednesday, I decided to highlight one of my most anticipated releases of 2017! And since Wednesday is “Meme-Day” here on Too Much of a Book Nerd – lol not really, I just made that up – I decided to turn this into a Waiting on Wednesday post!

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine. It is a weekly meme that spotlights upcoming book releases that you’re eagerly anticipating.

As I said before, the following book is one of my MOST HIGHLY ANTICIPATED RELEASES this year!!!! You might have heard of it before, or you haven’t. But that’s cool because I am here and I’m about to share it with you!

Anddddd the book is called……………

*drum roll please*

27 Hours by Tristina Wright

And if you’re wondering: “Jackie, why is this one of your most anticipated releases this year?????” BOY, LET ME TELL YOU 😀

This is a book for the QUEER KIDS! 27 Hours has absolutely zero, niente, nada, no straight characters!!! Woooo!!! The rep in this book is really damn great – we have a-, bi- and pansexuals, people of colour and disabled characters! LIKE WHAAAAT?! And this is a SFF book! Queer teens in space, what more could you want? And apparently this is a very fast-paced and action-packed story with incredible writing! AND it is part of a series! YESSSS!

This book has it all AND I AM TOTALLY HERE FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!

But enough talking from me, let’s check out the synopsis below!

“Rumor Mora fears two things: hellhounds too strong for him to kill, and failure. Jude Welton has two dreams: for humans to stop killing monsters, and for his strange abilities to vanish.

But in no reality should a boy raised to love monsters fall for a boy raised to kill them.

Nyx Llorca keeps two secrets: the moon speaks to her, and she’s in love with Dahlia, her best friend. Braeden Tennant wants two things: to get out from his mother’s shadow, and to unlearn Epsilon’s darkest secret.

They’ll both have to commit treason to find the truth.

During one twenty-seven-hour night, if they can’t stop the war between the colonies and the monsters from becoming a war of extinction, the things they wish for will never come true, and the things they fear will be all that’s left.

27 Hours is a sweeping, thrilling story featuring a stellar cast of queer teenagers battling to save their homes and possibly every human on Sahara as the clock ticks down to zero.”

Now, if I have helped you jump on the aweseomeness wagon that is 27 Hours and you’re thinking: “Wow, Jackie! Thanks for sharing this wonderfully queer masterpiece of a book with us! Where can I order it?”

Review: Geekerella by Ashley Poston – RELEASE DAY!

GeekerellaTitle: Geekerella

Author: Ashley Poston

Genre: YA, Contemporary

Published on: April 4th 2017 by Quirk Books (today!)

Pages: 320

*I received a free e-ARC by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*

(via Goodreads): “Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again?

Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.”

“I thought you said that if someone likes something, then it’s not dumb.”

Happy Geekerella release day!!!!!!!!!

I have been anticipating this book for WEEKS and I got so incredibly excited when my request on Netgalley got approved! Like you don’t even understand how happy it made me!

This was, hands down, one of the cutest books I’ve ever read! It gave me ALL. THE. FEELS. My heart almost couldn’t take it ❤

Just to let you know, this review will mostly consist of me geeking out, internally squealing and gushing about this book. Also, this must be the longest review I’ve ever written so that might give you a hint towards my feelings for this wonderful book 😉

Geekerella is a modern day Cinderella retelling about a nerdy geek girl called Elle. She lives together with her stepmom and –sisters who try to make her life as miserable as possible. The only happy thing in her life is Starfield, a TV show that she grew up watching since she was a little girl. The show is being made into a movie and there’s a contest that Elle desperately wants to win as it is her only chance to escape the unhappiness that she experiences at home.

The story is so intriguing right from the start and I couldn’t help but get lured in. I don’t know what it was, I just felt so incredibly connected to the story and the main character from the beginning!

Elle is such a loveable character and I could relate to her on so many levels! She is a proper fangirl and geeks out over her favourite TV show like any other person who is passionate about something! I can’t even express just how much I could relate to her! Personally, I am a part of a lot of fandoms, some book-related but mostly artists/boy bands and TV shows. What Starfield means to Elle is what One Direction (or The Vampire Diaries, if we’re talking about TV shows) means to me.

Let’s get real personal for a second… 😉 I have been a fan of 1D for almost 7 years now and they have played a big part in my life for years. I met some of the most amazing people through them, some of which I get to call my best friends :’) I still consider myself a part of the fandom and they will always have a special place in my heart, no matter what.

So when Elle fangirls and gets passionate about her favourite TV show, writing and reading fanfiction, being part of the online community and exchanging thoughts and feelings with other fellow fans, I TOTALLY GET IT! ❤

There were some sentences and scenes in the book that really made me tear up. There were times where Elle tried to explain to “outsiders” the sense of unity and community that you get when you’re in a fandom, alongside people who all love the same thing as you do and I could totally relate. More often than not people would look at me funnily or not take me seriously when I talked about online friends that I’ve never met and they wouldn’t even try to understand! Elle was bullied for her Starfield passion so often in this book and I could really sympathize and it almost broke my heart.

“Why does it have to be stupid or childish? It taught me a lot of things. Like about friendship and loyalty, and how to think critically and look for all sides of a narrative.”

Geekerella is told from two points of view. The first POV is Elle’s (obviously lol) and the second one is Darien’s.

Darien Freeman is a young, teen actor and heart-throb who just landed the lead role in the movie reboot of Starfield. In a way, you can compare his situation to Elle’s as Darien isn’t taken seriously a lot of the time either. For him, it’s the lack of respect from his actor colleagues and the media. Having successful parents, people think that he got everything handed to him on a silver plate. On set he is being treated like a kid by people who don’t feel like he deserved to play the lead role.

Darien has to take on the role of Carmindor, a character that is well-loved by the very passionate Starfield fanbase. The fans have very high expectations and being a young, insecure actor whose career is basically just starting out, it puts a lot of pressure on him.

I really liked Darien as a character. Since we see the story from his point of view, too, you really get to know who he really is and how he feels about the fame, the pressure and everything that comes with it. Deep down he is a normal boy, like you and me, who has been thrown into fame and is still trying to figure out how to deal with it. And what the media doesn’t know is that he is an actual Starfield geek himself! I have grown very fond of him, as he does and says some things that are just sooo sweet! ❤

Geekerella was your typical hate-to-love trope/story but I am a sucker for these kinds of tropes so I was bound to love this book.

I especially loved how the author incorporated all of the original Cinderella elements; we had the evil stepmum with her evil daughters, the pumpkin carriage that wasn’t a carriage but a food truck called The Magic Pumpkin where Elle was working with her newly found friend Sage, we even had the glass slipper that gets lost! (and later found by the prince himself). The retelling has been done in such an adorable way and I couldn’t help but get sucked into the story. It was very well done, in my opinion, and sooo cute!

What I also really liked is that Geekerella has some diverse characters. Our loveable prince Darien Freeman is a man of colour and there is a side-story involving two LGBTQ+ characters! Kudos 🙂

I will DEFINITELY purchase this book and read it again and again and again. It was my favourite read of the month!

I would totally recommend it to all the fangirls out there! If you are/used to be part of a fandom and/or like a good hate-to-love (fanfiction) trope or you’re looking for a super adorable, geeky contemporary read then Geekerella is the book for you! 🙂

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  (5 out of 5 stars) and a special place in my ❤

The book is out TODAY so go out there and buy it immediately! 10/10 would recommend! Geez, I need to stop freaking out about it 😀

Goodreads /Amazon (US) / Amazon (UK) /  Barnes & Noble

Would you consider yourself a fangirl? Or did you use to be one? What did you fangirl about? Let’s chat in the comments, I’d be happy to meet fellow fangirls and fanboys, too! 🙂

  • The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli, Release Day: April 11th 2017

The Upside of UnrequitedI’ve only heard the very best things about this one and I feel like I will be able to relate to the main character so well! Also, this is an #ownvoices book, so yay!

(via Goodreads): “Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.

Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly’s totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie’s new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. If Molly can win him over, she’ll get her first kiss and she’ll get her twin back.

There’s only one problem: Molly’s coworker, Reid. He’s a chubby Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there’s absolutely no way Molly could fall for him.

  • Defy the Stars by Claudia Grey, Release Day: April 4th 2017

Defy The StarsI randomly stumbled across this one day and it sounds sooo intriguing! I usually don’t reach for sci-fi/outer space types of books but I feel like this will be a GREAT read!

(via Goodreads): “Noemi Vidal is a teen soldier from the planet Genesis, once a colony of Earth that’s now at war for its independence. The humans of Genesis have fought Earth’s robotic “mech” armies for decades with no end in sight.

After a surprise attack, Noemi finds herself stranded in space on an abandoned ship where she meets Abel, the most sophisticated mech prototype ever made. One who should be her enemy. But Abel’s programming forces him to obey Noemi as his commander, which means he has to help her save Genesis–even though her plan to win the war will kill him.

Together they embark on a daring voyage through the galaxy. Before long, Noemi begins to realize Abel may be more than a machine, and, for his part, Abel’s devotion to Noemi is no longer just a matter of programming.”

  • Champion: The Graphic Novel by Marie Lu, Release Day: April 25th 2017

Champion graphic novel

How cool is it that the books from the Legend series were made into graphic novels?!!!?! I haven’t read these yet but once Champion is out I’ll definitely purchase all three of them! Like this is SO. COOL.

(via Goodreads): “The final book in Marie Lu’s best-selling “Legend” trilogy draws to a thrilling conclusion in this vibrant graphic novel adaptation.

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic–and each other–and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps Elect while Day has been assigned a high-level military position.

But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them once again. Just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything he has.”
