Favorite Minor Characters – Top 5 Wednesday

T5W

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Samantha from Thoughts on Tomes and Lainey from Ginger Reads Lainey. If you’re new to Top 5 Wednesday and want to participate, check out the Goodreads group for information and weekly topics!

This week’s topic is Favorite Minor Characters – Minor characters are less than a sidekick or a side character (but not in our hearts!)

Everyone has a different definition of what a minor character is and I honestly don’t even know how I would define it!

It was actually quite difficult to find minor characters because a lot of characters I love are people I’d consider side characters! I’ll probably have a revelation moment when I go through other people’s T5W posts and remember all the lovely minor characters that I’ve forgotten! 😀

But anyway, please enjoy my 5 favorite minor characters!

Chuck from The Maze Runner

“Then I just got used to it, I guess. This became home, even though we spend every day hoping to get out.”

Oh my god, Chuck. My sweet, precious Chuck! He was such a good character! So curious and nosy and lovely and kind and I’m still bitter about what happened to him!!!

Finnick Odair from The Hunger Games

“Finnick?” I say, “Maybe some pants?”
He looks down at his legs as if noticing his outfit for the first time. Then he whips off his hospital gown leaving him in just his underwear. “Why? Do you find this” — he strikes a ridiculously provocative pose — “distracting?”

I don’t know if you’d consider him a minor character?!?! I think he’s like inbetween side and minor character? Or more side character? Whatever, I don’t really care – I just really wanted to mention him! 😀 Finnick is my favourite character in the THG trilogy! He’s so charming and witty and just an overall fabulous character. And can I just say that HE DESERVED BETTER!!!! (A bonus: he’s really nice to look at in the movies ;))

Dean Thomas from Harry Potter

“We’re fighting, aren’t we? The message said Harry was back, and we were going to fight! I’ll have to get a wand, though […] “

I think I’m just biased because I love Alfie Enoch so much! 😛

James Kent from Shatter Me

“Why do you call her ‘love’? I’ve heard you say that before, too. A lot. I think Adam’s in love with her. Kenji’s not in love with her. though. I already asked him.”

I HAVE NO PERSON TO CAST AS JAMES DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY CUTE 10-12 YEAR OLD BOYS THAT COULD BE JAMES

MY SWEET BABY JAMES I can’t wait to see more of him (and his interactions with a certain brother *COUGH*) in the new Shatter Me books!!!!!!!!!!!

Lexi from The Vampire Diaries

” I was feeling epic, whatever. “

I’m talking about the TV show Lexi here because I haven’t read the TVD books! I really freakin’ LOVE Lexi as a character! She is definitely one of my all time favourite characters on TVD and I wish she’d had more screen-time! The way she always cared for Stefan was so amazing ❤

That’s it for my favorite minor characters! Hope you enjoyed!

Thanks for reading!

QUICK LIFE UPDATE: I’m seeing Little Mix tomorrow (AHHHH!) so I won’t be posting tomorrow! But I’ll have a Fierce Fangirl Friday post up all about the concert on Friday!!!!! Hopefully. I might also sleep all day. We’ll see XD

Favorite Summer Reads

T5WTop 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Samantha and Lainey over on YouTube. Each week there is a new book-related topic to answer! If you’re new to Top 5 Wednesday and want to participate, check out the Goodreads group for information and weekly topics!

This week’s topic is Summer Reads – The weather is heating up (for half of the world), so what books remind you of summer and are your quintessential summer reads?

For me, both spring and summer are all about cute and fluffy contemporaries! Summertime is all about lazing in the sun, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside (whether it’s caused by actual people or books! XD) and it just generally evokes a feeling of happiness and contentment within me! Summer is my favourite time of the year ❤

So, here are my summer reads recommendations! Some of them are books I’ve read and some of them are books that give me those warm, fuzzy feelings just by looking at/thinking of them 😛

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Geekerella was one of my favourite reads of the year!!! Such a fluffy story involving a nerd convention, what it’s like to be part of a fandom and two super geeky characters falling in love in the most adorable way! And what a great Cinderella retelling it was! I am definitely going to re-read this when I’m on vacation in summer! ❤

Paper Towns by John Green

This is a story Quentin who goes on an adventurous road trip/journey following clues that Margo, the girl he crushes on, left for him to find. I read Paper Towns when I was on vacation in Spain 2 years ago! Whenever I think of the book, it just brings me back to that summer and the days on the beach! And who doesn’t love a good ol’ road trip story?!

Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

This is the cheesy, fluffy and super cute contemporary novel that I’m looking for!!! I can already see May screaming at me for still not having continued reading this but I HAVE OFFICIALLY PUT SIMON VS. ON MY SUMMER TBR WITH THIS POST AND I WILL READ IT SOON SO DON’T WORRY! 😀 Anyway, if you haven’t heard of this book by now you must have been living under a ROCK – go read it now because it’s awesome and super cute!

Anna and the French Kiss (+companions) by Stephanie Perkins

The covers for these three books just remind me of summer whenever I look at them! And the Anna and the French Kiss trilogy is another set of cute and quick contemporary reads! The first book is set in Paris – the city of love – and who doesn’t love to read a love story set in PARIS!!!

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

I’ve been SO DAMN EXCITED for this book for MONTHS now and it will finally be here at the end of May (June for me)!!!!!!!!!! One of my most anticipated reads of the year and the cover already gives me summer-y vibes and I JUST KNOW THAT THE STORY WILL BE ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE AND GIVING ME ALL THE FEELS!!! ❤

That’s it for my quintessential summer reads and recommendations!

By the way, did you see? I CHANGED FONT SIZE!!! YAY thank so much to my dear friend May @ Forever and Everly for your help 😛

Thanks for reading!

T5W: Authors I Want to Read More From

T5WTop 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Samantha and Lainey over on YouTube. Each week there is a new book-related topic to answer! If you’re new to Top 5 Wednesday and want to participate, check out the Goodreads group for information and weekly topics!

This week’s topic is Authors You Want to Read More FromTalk about some authors that you’ve only read one or a few books from, and you NEED to read more!
Becky AlbertalliBecky Albertalli

I’ve been following Becky on Twitter for a long time and it just made me adore her as a person! Recently, I’ve started reading Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (and I still haven’t finished oops I’m sorry, don’t scream at me!!!) and completely fell in love with it and Becky’s writing! I feel like she is the MASTER of writing incredible, diverse, YA contemporary novels! Her new novel The Upside of Unrequited is supposed to be SOOOO GOOD, too! I can’t wait to get my hands on it! I hope she writes many more novels because I want to read them all!

Angie Thomas

Her debut novel The Hate U Give has gotten so much (well-deserved) hype and attention! She is talking about very relevant issues in that book and I need EVERYONE to read it! She is also so inspiring and genuine! I really hope she’ll be working on more projects in the future because I would totally read more from her!

Stephanie GarberStephanie Garber

Caraval was her debut novel and one of my favourite releases of this year! I fell in love with her writing and the world she built and I can’t wait for the sequel and (hopefully) other future projects!

Ashley Poston

I’ve only recently discovered Ashley Poston after reading Geekerella which was one of the most adorable books I’ve ever read and one of my favourite books of 2017!!! She is a true nerd/fangirl herself and so relatable and I NEED to read more from her!!! She is coming out with a new YA Sci-Fi novel in 2018 called Heart of Iron and apparently it’s an Anastasia meets Firefly kind of book AND I NEED IT RIGHT NOW!!! GIMMEEEE!!!

Sandhya Menon

Her debut novel When Dimple Met Rishi is coming out at the end of May and I already know I’m going to LOVE IT! She is also coming out with another YA Contemporary novel in 2018 which is also going to be about an Indian-American girl! I truly cannot wait to read her books! She also seems like such a genuine and sweet person!

That’s it for my T5W picks! Thanks for reading!

Favorite LGBTQ+ Reads

I’m back with another Top 5 Wednesday post! Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Samantha and Lainey over on YouTube. Each week there is a new book-related topic to answer! If you’re new to Top 5 Wednesday and want to participate, check out the Goodreads group for information and weekly topics!

This week’s topic is Favorite LGBTQ Reads – Talk about your favorite books that feature LGBTQ+ characters or are by LGBTQ+ authors.

I’d just like to note that this post is severely outdated (it’s one of the first few posts I’ve ever published) which is why some of the answer may be seen as “cliché”. I’ll hopefully be making another post like this including some newer LGBTQ+ releases soon.

Top 5 Wednesday: Books That Would Make Good Video Games

T5WTime for Top 5 Wednesday! T5W is a weekly book meme hosted by Samantha and Lainey over on YouTube. Each week there is a new book-related topic to answer! If you’re new to Top 5 Wednesday and want to participate, check out the Goodreads group for information and weekly topics!

This week’s topic is Books That Would Make Good Video Games!

I do play video games every once in a while like Mario Kart and all that jazz but I’m no expert. At first, I was really struggling to think of books that could be video games! I had my Spotify on shuffle and I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor came on (such a jam!) and it reminded me of The Martian because it is part of the movie soundtrack! Well, that set the ball rolling and the ideas kept coming! Enjoy!

*click on the book covers to be directed to the Goodreads page*

The MartianThe Martian by Andy Weir: So who would have guessed it? My first choice is The Martian! 😀 How cool would a video game based on the movie be? Quick side note: I haven’t read the book yet so I’ll be talking about what I’ve seen in the movie here. Basically, I imagine a video game to be exactly like the movie! Your character ends up being left alone on Mars, trying to survive on their own! Just like Mark Watney you have to figure out how/where to get food and water, build and rebuild everything and create a plan that will get you back home! (Obviously you’ll receive clues along the way to guide you 😉 )

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin: I don’t know if a Game of Thrones video game already exists but I have a vision for this one 😉 You could start out as a little Lord, choosing the side of one family. Lannister, Stark, Baratheon, Targaryen, etc choose whoever you’d like! You work your way up from there, fighting battles, plotting and scheming, doing whatever you can until you (and the family you’ve chosen) end up at the top! I don’t know if it makes sense. Anyway, something along those lines would be cool! 😀

Caraval

Caraval by Stephanie Garber: I haven’t read The Night Circus so I don’t know if the concepts of these two books are similar… But I think it’d be really cool if there was a Caraval inspired video game! A world that is as magical, dark and mysterious as Caraval where you are given clues in order to find a precious treasure (it doesn’t have to be Scarlett’s sister, there could be different prizes for different levels!) and win the game!

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: How did no one think to make a video game out of the actual Hunger Games???!?! I for one would have definitely bought it back in the days (and even now)! You choose a character (or maybe you can even create one yourself!) to participate in the Hunger Games and you fight your way to the top. Either by killing everyone else or teaming up with others, do whatever you please!

ADSOMA Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab: Alright, so I haven’t actually read this book (yet) but from what I know about it, this could be a super cool video game! I believe the world consists of 4 different Londons, right? And each London is different? So you are one of the travelers, “visiting” each London and fighting (or whatever the MC is doing in the books) in order to save the world? Or whatever needs saving :’) Again, I haven’t read the books so this is very vague! 😀

Thank you for reading!

Jackie x

PS. I didn’t mention Harry Potter in this one because DUUUHHHHH!!! 😀

Do you play video games? Which are your favourites? What books do you think would make good video games? Remember, video games don’t always have to include action! I could imagine a Wizard of Oz/Alice in Wonderland video game for the younger people out there! Let’s chat in the comments.

I am currently in Munich so this post is pre-written/scheduled. I will be replying to comments once I am back home! Don’t think I’m ignoring you, I would NEVER! 😛

Illuminae Furthermore Seafarer's Kiss

  • Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff: I bought both Illuminae and Gemina a long while ago but I just never get around to reading them! I don’t usually read many sci-fi books but the format of this one is DOPE!
  • Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi: Can you believe I don’t even OWN Furthermore??? Smh I’m such a FAKE Tahereh Mafi stan. Is she really my favourite author if I don’t even own all of her books? (Who am I kidding, YES SHE IS!) I keep waiting for a good deal on Amazon for the hardcover but it never comes. You know what, I should just buy this already! And gosh, the cover of this is just gorgeous isn’t it? 😍
  • The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julia Ember: This one comes out in May and I’m SOOO excited for it! It’s a Little Mermaid retelling and it has a f/f romance! I just know I’m going to love this one!

A Thousand Pieces Of You The Valiant

  • A Thousand Pieces Of You by Claudia Gray: When I read the first line of the synopsis “Cloud Atlas meets Orphan Black” I was SOLD! Orphan Black is such. a. fantastic. show! This book better be goooood!
  • The Valiant by Leslie Livingston: Female gladiators. FEMALE GLADIATORS. I don’t think I need to say much more.

Thanks for reading!

Top 5 Wednesday: Future Classics

T5WTime for Top 5 Wednesday! T5W is a weekly book meme hosted by Samantha and Lainey over on YouTube. Each week there is a new book-related topic to answer! If you’re new to Top 5 Wednesday and want to participate, check out the Goodreads group for information and weekly topics!

This week’s topic is Future Classics!

*click on the book covers to be directed to the Goodreads page*

  1. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas: I really do hope that this will be considered a classic in the future! I need teachers all over the world to be talking about this book, making sure to educate their students on this matter. It is based on the Black Lives Matter movement and SO relevant! The events happening in The Hate U Give are fictional but police brutality against black people is a very present and very real problem in America! It makes me sick to my stomach that the things portayed in the book are REAL and there’s nothing I can do to prevent it. I hate feeling this powerless. A very relevant and important book that depicts current events in an unapologetically honest way that needs to be read by everyone!

The Hate U Give

  • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak: To be honest, I already consider this a classic. I feel like almost everyone has read this at least once in their life, or at the very least has it on their TBR. This book is so powerful, both pretty and ugly, beautiful and heart-breaking, simply brilliant and a must-read in my opinion.

The Book Thief

  1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: This is definitely going to be considered a classic in the future, if it isn’t already! I feel like THG is the first YA fantasy series with a dystopian setting that really opened up a new door for young readers, and really introducing them to the YA/Fantasy/Dystopian genre! At least it was that way for me! Sure, there was the Twilight Saga but for me The Hunger Games really took it to another level!

The Hunger Games

  1. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini: This was published during the U.S. war in Afghanistan and as a result of 9/11 and I believe it is an important read and could become a classic in the future! It is definitely sitting in the classics section on my shelf 😉

The Kite Runner

  1. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling: Okay, who didn’t see this coming? 😀 We all know we’re going to read these books to our kids and grandkids, nieces and nephews. These books are timeless and will be passed on and shared for generations!

Harry Potter 1

Honorable Mentions: Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (it’d be SO cool if this became a classic!)

Jackie x

What books do you think will be considered classics one day? Are there any (underrated) books that you wish more people would read because they’d make a good classic? Chat with me in the comments, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Top 5 Wednesday: Favourite Angsty Romances

T5WIt’s Wednesday! And that means it’s time for Top 5 Wednesday! T5W is a weekly book meme hosted by Samantha from Thoughts on Tomes and Lainey from Ginger Reads Lainey. If you’re new to Top 5 Wednesday and want to participate, check out the Goodreads group for information and weekly topics!

This week’s topic is Favorite Angsty Romances!

definition: “angst” adj.: describes a situation or literary piece which contains dark, depressing, angry, and/or brooding emotions from the participating characters

*note: these are in no particular order (except maybe the first two)*

  1. Juliette and Warner from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi

Alright, so if you really know me then you KNOW that Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me series is my favourite series in the entire world and I would quite literally die for Warner! And if you’ve read the series you might agree with me that these books are full of angst, especially Ignite Me. I’ve only just re-read this series at the beginning of this year but god, just thinking about it makes me want to re-read it all over again! The relationship between Warner and Juliette is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Their romance is definitely full of angst, despair, frustration, love, strength, power, they’ve got it all. 10/10 would recommend 😉

  1. June and Day from the Legend series by Marie Lu

I almost didn’t remember this series because they’re not on my shelf since I got them from the library! I read these a long time ago but I remember feeling a lot of angst while reading these. June and Day are two teens in love who can’t be together at the end of book 2 due to certain circumstances that I can’t mention because I don’t want to spoil anything *winks*. Anyway, in the third book you experience a lot of angst between these two! There’s a lot of fighting, action, love, loss and pain. I really loved this series and the romance between these two. Very angsty, very emotional. (Damn, I really want to reread this series now!)

  1. Allie and Noah from The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

The NotebookWe all know Allie and Noah’s love story. If you haven’t read the book then you’ve probably seen the movie at least once (or ten times) and cried all the way through. This book/movie does not quite match my own definition of angst but I’d say it definitely has an angsty touch. I don’t think I need to explain, you guys know all the scenes! Just take a look at the rain scene or the “What do you want?” scene!

  1. Lou and Will from Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Me Before YouAlright, I don’t think I need to explain this one either, right? I’ve seen the hype around Me Before You for years! I’ve only read the book last year shortly before the movie came out and I totally fell in love with it. Sure, there are some issues and I know that some people don’t like this book that much but I think it’s a great book. Will and Lou definitely have an angsty relationship and it was both heartbreaking and beautiful. I really enjoyed the movie, too, but I might have been influenced by Sam Claflin. He is just a gorgeous human being, isn’t he?

  1. Adam and Mia from Where She Went (If I Stay #2) by Gayle Forman

Where She WentWhere She Went is the sequel to If I Stay. While I didn’t like If I Stay as much as I expected to (it just didn’t live up to the hype!), I adored Where She Went! I thought it was so much better than the first book! It takes place 3 years later and is told from Adam’s point of view; Adam and Mia are broken up, they’re older and more mature, and they meet again and inevitably have to revisit the past. And I just remember feeling so much angst while reading this book! Gayle Forman’s writing was so incredible and fitting, she really knew how to pull at my heart strings and pull the angst out of my chest!

Honorable Mention:

  1. Will and Layken from Slammed by Colleen Hoover

Slammed.jpg

This is the first (and so far only) CoHo book I’ve read and I have to say I really enjoyed it! I read it last year and to be honest, I don’t quite remember much of it *oops*. I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads though, so it must have been good, haha! All I know is that I really liked the romance between Will and Layken. It was your typical angsty, teenage love story, sometimes a tiny bit too cheesy and dramatic for my liking, but it tugged at my heart and had an angsty feel to it. I definitely have to re-read this some day!

That’s it for my Top 5 Favourite Angsty Romances for now! I know there’s loads of other angsty romances out there and I have a lot of the books on my TBR so I hope I’ll get to them soon and maybe do a part 2?!

Also, I know I’ve been very vague when talking about these relationships but I didn’t want to spoil anything!

Thanks for reading,

Jackie x

Tell me about your favourite angsty romances! Are any of them on my list? What is your #1 favourite angsty relationship like EVER? Please let me know in the comments below, I’m always looking for recs 🙂
