Spring Cleaning – New Theme, New Design, NEW EVERYTHING

Spring is here – well, it has been here for a while now lol – and I was in the mood to do some organising, cleaning, designing and just CHANGE in general! You may also want to call this Spring Cleaning 😀 So I thought why not start with my blog!

I’ve been meaning to change my theme and general blog design for a while AND I FINALLY DID IT!!!! You might have already seen it – or you haven’t lol.

If you’re reading this in your WordPress Reader… ummmmmm what are you doing, GO CHECK OUT MY NEW BLOG DESIGN!!! Please? 😀

I’m quite happy with how it all turned out! As you might (or might now) know, blue is my favourite colour and I am in love with all the different shades of blue/teal/turquoise etc that are now all over my blog ❤

cheers (7)

So, about the theme…… STORYTIME!!!!! 😀

I’ve had the Button theme since I started my blog and I think it must be the most popular theme on WordPress! I’ve seen a ton of people who use it, too! And I honestly didn’t mind it because I DO think it is so neat and cute – but I felt like it was time for something different!

I found a few themes that I really liked! I even picked one and already started re-designing everything! The theme looked so pretty with the Default Header from WordPress – but once I changed it and uploaded my own, it just looked….. weird.

SO, I kept looking for themes but none really ~spoke~ to me the way Sela did! I feel like Sela is the runner-up when it comes to WordPress themes. AND I LOVE IT! It’s so simple but so PRETTY! So, I ended up with Sela and I love it. :’)

I know that a lot of people have Sela as their theme but I honestly don’t mind! I still think every blog looks SO different! Everyone has their own individual headers and graphics, colours and structure, and it makes every blog unique! And I don’t really pay too much attention to someone’s theme, I think I look a lot more at the graphics and the content!

SOOOO, check out my lovely new theme and my header and all the pretty blueeesss! *heart eyes*

AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK! PLEASE! If something looks off, tell meeeee!!! Pretty pleaseeee! 😀

graphics)

NOW, ONTO THE GRAPHICS!!!! 😀

To start off, let me just tell you that I’m no graphic designer and I can’t create pretty-looking graphics FOR THE LIFE OF ME!

But I found a few super cute design freebies and I decided to use them and create my own headers with them! You may have already seen a few new graphics!

Check out the super simple but cute graphic for my tags!

TAGTIME
Credit for the lovely flower-y pattern 😛

I also created some dividers but I’m not quite sure yet if I’ll be using them! I’ll have to play around with it and see if I like it! 🙂

I also have headers that I would use like the ones in this post but I don’t know if I like these yet… I’m still looking for a pretty flower-y pattern so actually… just ignore these headers! They’re only temporary! Or maybe not? I don’t know yet 😀

cheers (8)

Hmm, what else?

I still have a few graphics for memes (T5W, TTT) and stuff that I need to create so I’m still working on that but you’ll see them in my future posts! 🙂

That’s all the graphics I have for now!

ANOTHER THING that came along with my Spring Cleaning…… I just really wanted to create something original for my blog! And I can finally say…….

…….I have an idea for a new original segment for my blog YAYYYY!!! I’ll tell you more about it and give you information in a new post on Sunday so GET EXCITED BECAUSE I’M QUITE EXCITED ABOUT IT!!!!! 😀

Sooooo, I think this is it for now! I really hope you like what you see 😀

As always, thanks for reading 🙂

OH BY THE WAY… I have also created a cute lil button thingy to sign off (is that the right word???) my posts YAY!

Annnndddddd here comes my button!!!! ❤

Buttonnnn

So what do you think? Do you like my new theme and the header for my blog? What do you think about my graphics? Does the lil button with my name on it look good? Is there anything that looks off/things that I should change? Please let me know!!! And what do you think about dividers? Do you use them? Should I use them? Let’s chat in the comments!

Review: 180 Seconds by Jessica Park | Spoiler Free

Title: 180 Seconds

Author: Jessica Park

Genre: New Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Published: April 25th 2017 by Skyscrape

Pages: 300

Rating: 4 Stars

*I received a free ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence my opinion in any way!*

Blurb via Goodreads: “Some people live their entire lives without changing their perspective. For Allison Dennis, all it takes is 180 seconds…

After a life spent bouncing from one foster home to the next, Allison is determined to keep others at arm’s length. Adopted at sixteen, she knows better than to believe in the permanence of anything. But as she begins her third year in college, she finds it increasingly difficult to disappear into the white noise pouring from her earbuds.

One unsuspecting afternoon, Allison is roped into a social experiment just off campus. Suddenly, she finds herself in front of a crowd, forced to interact with a complete stranger for 180 seconds. Neither she, nor Esben Baylor, the dreamy social media star seated opposite her, is prepared for the outcome.

When time is called, the intensity of the experience overwhelms Allison and Esben in a way that unnerves and electrifies them both. With a push from her oldest friend, Allison embarks on a journey to find out if what she and Esben shared is the real thing—and if she can finally trust in herself, in others, and in love.”

!CONTENT WARNING! While this is a cute contemporary novel, it also mentions/deals with some heavy topics such as death, cancer, rape and sexual assault. If you get triggered by any of these, I suggest not reading this book or to read carefully and at your own risk.

180 Seconds is a New Adult contemporary novel about how 180 seconds literally changed Allison Dennis’ life.

Allison is a foster child and has been sent from one home to the next. She never felt like she belonged anywhere and with every passing year she grew wary of trusting people. She was finally adopted by a loving, gay, single father but the past experiences still left their mental scars.

Allison is an introverted, anxious girl who isolates herself and avoids social situations like the plague – the only time she ever leaves her dorm room is to go to college classes or study at the library. She doesn’t let people get too close and hides away in her room most of the time She doesn’t display emotional or physical affection and she has a hard time trusting people.

And that certainly shows in the first interactions we see between Allison and her father.

Her adoptive father Simon is a very sweet, kind and loving man. He respects her boundaries and makes her feel loved and cared for at all times. Being the insecure and scared girl that she is, Allison still believes that her adoptive father has made a mistake with her and thinks he regrets adopting her because of her social awkwardness and isolation. But he never fails to reassure her that he loves her, he showers her with gifts, teases her and is always there for her when she needs him.

Their father-daughter relationship is AWESOME and I especially loved how it developed throughout the story as Allison grows as a person. At first she has a hard time forming a close connection to her adoptive father – she still calls him by his first name, she doesn’t open the packages he sends to her dorm every other week and just doesn’t let him get too close to her.

By the end of the story, Allison and Simon have formed a very tight and strong bond. She learns how to trust him and she starts telling him about exciting things that happen in her life and you can really tell how happy that makes Simon. She even starts calling him Dad and she finally feels like they’re a real family. I just think the development of their relationship was so beautifully done and it has even made me tear up a couple of times! :’)

And Simon is just #dadgoals.

“If I could throw an invisibility cloak over myself and attend college that way, I would.”

The only friend that Allison has is Steffi whom she has known from foster care. They’re polar opposites – Steffi is a tough and confident girl who doesn’t mind being the center of attention while Allison would love nothing more than to hide in her room 24/7 – but it works well for them and they’re best friends.

Steffi is the only person that knows everything about Allison’s past. She’s the one person that Allison can turn to when things aren’t going so well and Steffi will always give her a good pep talk! Sometimes I wish I had a friend like that who kicks my butt and gets me to take risks and get out of my comfort zone!

The thing I loved the most about this book was Allison’s wonderful character development that was exerted so perfectly. She turns from an introverted outsider into a confident and happy young woman with newfound friends and a great family support system.

One person who is probably the catalyst of her development is Esben Baylor – popular social media star and the guy she shares a very passionate kiss with after staring each other down for 3 minutes for one of his social experiments.

A lot of emotions wash over Allison in those 3 minutes – anger, pain, hurt, betrayal – and an unexpected connection develops between the two of them.

And that 180 seconds scene. WOW. Reading that was so intense and powerful and MAGICAL, I was so fully invested in that particular scene. I don’t know how else to explain it – other than it literally left me shook. It took my breath away. It was so incredible to read like wow. Just wow. I encourage everyone to read this book simply for that one 180 seconds scene! 😛

And I know what you might be thinking – “they shared a kiss and now they’re dating/in love?! *cough* INSTA-LOVE *cough*” – but that’s not how it is!!! After they kissed, there was a connection and they felt drawn to each other so they started going on dates. And isn’t that how it happens for a lot of us? They date for a few months before they really define their relationship and take it a step further!

The development of Allison and Esben’s relationship felt very realistic. It developed at a slow pace and they both took their time to really get to know each other.

For the first time in her life, Allison opens up to someone about her past and how the whole foster care experience made her feel. She literally tells him everything about her and explains how the experiences influenced her and how she came to be so socially awkward and introverted. She believes that this will scare Esben off because they’re both so different and she genuinely can’t fathom why he would even go on a date with her.

But Esben was a sweetheart ❤ He doesn’t ever make Allison feel bad or embarrassed for her past and being the way she is. He caters to her, shows a genuine interest and treats her with the utmost care and respect. He is a genuinely a good guy and their interactions especially at the beginning were super adorable and cute and I couldn’t help but AWW out loud a lot!

Being with Esben, who is so open, social and popular both on campus and online, challenges Allison. She finally realises that she can’t stay locked up in her room forever and has a change in attitude.

“You can’t reach what’s in front of you until you let go of what’s behind you.”

She learns to open up to people, how to socialize and that you can actually trust people! Her character development from anxious, socially awkard girl to loving and almost confident girl with a close circle of a few friends was amazing to read/bepart of.

I felt like I could relate to Allison a lot and she is generally a very relatable character if you’re an introvert.

I am usually ‘the shy one’ and I find it difficult to open up to someone and really be myself when I first meet new people. And yes, who doesn’t prefer staying curled up in bed all day with a good book over feeling anxious and uncomfortable in social situations!

And feeling so similar to Allison and seeing her grow into this happy and open young girl – who keeps a circle of a few, but very close friends – can be very inspiring. It was delightful to read about her personal growth and I feel like it could inspire people out there who feel the same way!

I did have a few small issues with some parts of the book – nothing too major though!

At first, I didn’t really know where the story was going to go plot-wise after the first contact between Allison and Esben – was it going to be insta-love and then they marry and have kids or what? But before I knew it, I was halfway and then all the way through the book! So the plot definitely moved along quickly! (I don’t want to say anything about it because spoiler-alertttt :D)

The writing definitely helped with that and it flowed very nicely.

Some passages of the book were a little weird to read. There were some lines of the dialogue that were VERY dramatic and metaphorical and there were things said in some of the dialogues that felt unnatural and they weren’t things that I would say in a real-life conversation.

Generally, the whole story turns very cheesy and dramatic around 2/3 into the book and some things were getting a tiny bit predictable. There were some scenes that felt repetitive because they were so similar;

  • Allison believes Esben stood her up at a date but his phone died and his car needed a jump. This basically happens twice – once at the start of the book and once at the end.
  • And the situations where Esben randomly meets new people and promotes their shops/ideas etc on his social media channels felt too repetitive after like third person!

But those things didn’t bother me too much and absolutely did not turn this into a bad reading experience.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and I particularly loved the first half because it was so nice to read about the adorable-ness that was Allison and Esben’s relationship!

180 Seconds is a very cute romantic contemporary novel about love, loss and heartbreak with a good amount of cheesiness and fluff, finding your place and yourself, coming out of your shell and finding love in the most unexpected situations.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 out of 5 stars)

April TBR + A Very ARC-ish Readathon

Hey guys! I know I’m like super late but here is my TBR for April!

Remember what I said in my March TBR about being a mood reader and never ending up reading the books I had planned to to read??????

Yeah. That’s pretty much what happened to me in March.

I only had two books on my TBR but I barely even finished one of them!

I was participating in a Buddy Read and that was pretty much my only motivation to keep on reading Jane Austen’s Emma! It’s not that I didn’t like it, I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads! It’s just that it got a little boring in the middle and I just wasn’t in the mood for it anymore. I kept reaching for other books so I almost had to force myself to read on! Never again.

I still plan on doing monthly TBR lists but I don’t think I’ll choose more than 3 books and I won’t make myself feel bad about not reading everything I had planned to!

*click on the book covers to be directed to the Goodreads page*

Six of Crows
The first book on my April TBR won’t come as a surprise to you since I KEEP TALKING ABOUT IT! It’s Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo! You’ve seen me talk about this one all month (and I’ve been whining about it to my friends for much longer) and I just can’t wait to read this already! I know for sure that I am in the mood to read this. Hell, I’ve been in the mood to read Six of Crows ever since it came out! I’m so, so, sooooo excited!

The Bone Season

The next book I plan to read is The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. I’ve had this book for a while and she recently came out with new covers that are absolutely beautiful! They’ve had a sample of the first chapter up for request on Netgalley and my overeager I’m-a-newbie-and-need-to-request-EVERYTHING self decided to request it. Huh???? Why did I request it? I literally own the book. I’ve had it for months. Like, what? Where’s the logic? But I guess that gives me a good excuse to finally start reading the series! 😀

Persuasion

If you’ve read my March TBR post you might remember that I mentioned putting one classic a month on my TBR list because I own so many and barely read any of them. For this month I wanted to choose something short because Emma has just been a pain to get through (even if I loved it!). I decided to go with Persuasion by Jane Austen. The novel is super thin and I hope I can breeze through it quickly!

No, this is not the end of the post! 😛

The next thing I’ll be talking about is A Very Arc-ish Readathon! It is hosted by Aimal over at Bookshelves and Paperbacks. Check out her post to see how you can participate!

a-very-arcish-readathon

Basically, the idea is to tackle the ARCs on your TBR! This is a pretty chill readathon, there are no challenges and everyone picks their own goals!

I have a lot of Netgalley ARCs waiting to be reviewed and since I’m back at university just after Easter and life will get a lot busier, I am going to try to get through most of my ARCs in April! (At least the ones that were released in March and the ones for April!) BUT I won’t pressure myself and just read whatever I’m in the mood for! I am also hoping to get to that precious 80% ratio, fingers crossed!

I won’t make a TBR for the ARCs because there’s so many and I’ll just pick whatever I’m in the mood for at the moment!

Thanks so much for reading!

Jackie x

Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them? And do you have a monthly TBR list or are you a mood reader like me and just don’t bother? What about those ARCs, which ones do you plan on reading this month? Let’s chat!

I hope you had a great April Fools’ Day and maybe even pranked/fooled some of your family members and friends!

Today I’ll be sharing with you my most highly anticipated releases for the month of April!

*click on the book covers to be directed to the Goodreads page*

  • Geekerella by Ashley Poston, Release Day: April 4th 2017

GeekerellaI had the privilege to read this already and I’ve absolutely loved it! It was my favourite read of the month! I can’t wait for everyone else to finally be able to read it soon! It’s coming out on Tuesday so be on the lookout for a full spoiler-free review!

(via Goodreads): “Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again?

Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.”

  • The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli, Release Day: April 11th 2017

The Upside of UnrequitedI’ve only heard the very best things about this one and I feel like I will be able to relate to the main character so well! Also, this is an #ownvoices book, so yay!

(via Goodreads): “Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.

Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly’s totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie’s new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. If Molly can win him over, she’ll get her first kiss and she’ll get her twin back.

There’s only one problem: Molly’s coworker, Reid. He’s a chubby Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there’s absolutely no way Molly could fall for him.

Right?”

  • Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor #1) by Mark Lawrence, Release Day: April 4th 2017

Red SisterThis has such great reviews on Goodreads and it sounds very interesting. I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

(via Goodreads): “I was born for killing – the gods made me to ruin.

At the Convent of Sweet Mercy young girls are raised to be killers. In a few the old bloods show, gifting talents rarely seen since the tribes beached their ships on Abeth. Sweet Mercy hones its novices’ skills to deadly effect: it takes ten years to educate a Red Sister in the ways of blade and fist.

But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don’t truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls as a bloodstained child of eight, falsely accused of murder: guilty of worse.

Stolen from the shadow of the noose, Nona is sought by powerful enemies, and for good reason. Despite the security and isolation of the convent her secret and violent past will find her out. Beneath a dying sun that shines upon a crumbling empire, Nona Grey must come to terms with her demons and learn to become a deadly assassin if she is to survive…”

  • Defy the Stars by Claudia Grey, Release Day: April 4th 2017

Defy The StarsI randomly stumbled across this one day and it sounds sooo intriguing! I usually don’t reach for sci-fi/outer space types of books but I feel like this will be a GREAT read!

(via Goodreads): “Noemi Vidal is a teen soldier from the planet Genesis, once a colony of Earth that’s now at war for its independence. The humans of Genesis have fought Earth’s robotic “mech” armies for decades with no end in sight.

After a surprise attack, Noemi finds herself stranded in space on an abandoned ship where she meets Abel, the most sophisticated mech prototype ever made. One who should be her enemy. But Abel’s programming forces him to obey Noemi as his commander, which means he has to help her save Genesis–even though her plan to win the war will kill him.

Together they embark on a daring voyage through the galaxy. Before long, Noemi begins to realize Abel may be more than a machine, and, for his part, Abel’s devotion to Noemi is no longer just a matter of programming.”

  • Champion: The Graphic Novel by Marie Lu, Release Day: April 25th 2017

Champion graphic novel

How cool is it that the books from the Legend series were made into graphic novels?!!!?! I haven’t read these yet but once Champion is out I’ll definitely purchase all three of them! Like this is SO. COOL.

(via Goodreads): “The final book in Marie Lu’s best-selling “Legend” trilogy draws to a thrilling conclusion in this vibrant graphic novel adaptation.

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic–and each other–and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps Elect while Day has been assigned a high-level military position.

But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them once again. Just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything he has.”

Thanks for reading!

March Wrap-Up

Happy last day of March everyone!

I can’t believe it’s the end of the month already! March went by so fast I barely even had time to blink! I only have a few weeks left of spring break until my busy uni life starts again which is saddddd 😦

Anyway, this is going to be a big wrap-up so I’ll just jump right in!

Books I Read

This month I read a total of 12 (!!!) books. I am honestly amazed at myself! I don’t think I have ever read this many books in a month! This book blog is really helping me read a lot more! Last year I only read 18 books IN TOTAL. That’s like, nothing compared to the books I read this month, hahaha!

Below you will find a list of all the books I’ve read this month and my rating for each of them! I’ll also link you to my reviews which are either up on my blog or on Goodreads! I’ve put hearts next to my favourite reads of the month :’)

Beauty of the Beast Death's Queen Ruin and Rising Beauty of the Beast

Ruin and Rising Geekerella Hold My Hand Emma

Death's Queen Angelfall Future Leaders Of Nowhere Angelfall

Reviews for both Geekerella and Future Leaders of Nowhere will be up on my blog next week so keep an eye out for that! I also have a review written for Angelfall but I honestly have no idea when I will upload it to my blog! Please let me know if you’re interested in it so I might schedule it for some time in April!

TV shows/Movies I watched

Okay so, veryone in my life knows that I am the biggest The Vampire Diaries fan and that it’s my favourite tv show of all time! TVD is the only show in my life that I’ve been watching since Day 1. I was 12 when the first episode aired and I literally grew up with it. And here we are 8 years later :’)

So you can imagine how I felt when the last episode aired on March 11th. I stayed up until 2am to live-watch the episode and I don’t think I ever cried that much in my life. I’ve been crying all day before the episode even aired because I couldn’t believe my favourite show was going to end :(, I cried all the way through the episode, and I cried for a whole hour afterwards before even attempting to fall asleep.

I was scared that I wouldn’t like the ending because how can you create a perfecting ending for a show like that? But I absolutely loved it! The ending brought me closure and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I think Julie Plec phrased it really well;  “It’s heartbreak. It’s hope. It’s happiness. It’s sadness. It’s definitely a clear sense of the future for many characters. It should feel like the end of a nice, beautiful, long novel that you’re finally bringing to a close.”

Songs I Listened To

I create a new Spotify playlist every month with songs I’ve been loving and these are the ones I particularly enjoyed and couldn’t stop listening to this month! I’ve added YouTube links where I could!

bloggiestafinish-300x134

Well, that’s a wrap!!! This year’s spring Bloggiesta is officially over!

This was my very first Bloggiesta and it was so much fun! I really put my focus this week on accomplishing the things on my Bloggiesta To-Do list and it actually helped me accomplish ALL of the things that I planned to do! I really didn’t think I’d be able to complete all of the things on my list, I’m pleasantly surprised (and kind of proud of myself, haha)!

For anyone who is interested to see what I’ve accomplished this week head over to my original Spring Bloggiesta post to see the complete list!

I really enjoyed participating in the very first Twitter chat! Unfortunately, I couldn’t make the others due to the time difference but I still got to know some super sweet and fun bloggers! We talked about all things blogging; things we wanted to accomplish this week, how to keep blogging a fun experience and discussed what we crossed off of our to-do lists!

I also loved all the kind and encouraging comments I got from everyone participating in Bloggiesta! And even from people who weren’t participating. I felt very loved so thanks everyone :’)

All in all, it was a great experience and you’ll definitely (hopefully) see me joining a lot more Bloggiestas in the future! I already can’t wait for the summer Mini Bloggiesta! Seriously, summer can’t come fast enough! 😉bloggiestalogo

Spring Bloggiesta 2017

Bloggiesta-Button-2

Heeeyyyyy, it’s almost time for this year’s spring Bloggiesta! This is the very first bookish “meme” I am participating in and I’m very excited!

What is Bloggiesta, you’re asking? I think the hosts explained it very well;

“Bloggiesta is a blogging marathon revolving around ticking off those items on your to-do list and improving your blog while in the good company of other awesome bloggers doing the same thing.”

So, all you gotta do is write your very own to-do list and post it to your blog. It doesn’t matter how long or short it is, it’s your blog after all! You may also link it here so other Bloggiesta participants can see it and show you love and support!

The spring Bloggiesta takes part from March 20-26 so you still have plenty of time to write a to-do list if you want to participate 🙂

Here is my Spring Bloggiesta To-Do List!

re-write/organise my review policy
write my E&E and R&R review
☑ choose 1-2 weekly memes to participate in (T5W, T10T)
☑ schedule blog posts 2 weeks in advance
☑ do at least one mini challenge (updated/cleaned up my sidebar)
 figure out HTML/graphics etc
☑ re-organise review archive (I didn’t really change anything lol)
☑ write and schedule Mystery Blogger Award blog post
☑  comment on other Bloggiesta partipants blogs
☑ participate in at least one Twitter chat (I hope I can make the other two!)

Head over to the official Bloggiesta blog for more info!

Let’s do this! 😀
